The III International scientific research conference on «Historical and cultural heritage of the Great Silk Road and promotion of tourist destinations in the North Caucasus» started in the NCFU. The event is timed to the Year of sustainable tourism for the benefit of development, declared by the UNO in 2017. Scientists from Russia, Italy, Portugal, Hungary and other countries are focused on problems and prospects of development of the Great Silk Road as a top priority worldwide project in the field of tourism, on the possibility of forming its areas on the territory of Russia, on the potential of creating and promoting tourist destinations in the region.
The opening speech was made by Alina Levitskaya, Rector of the NCFU:
– The Great Silk Road is one of the major civilization routes with a millennial history, and we feel honoured to be able to participate in upcoming varied activities. Despite the fact that we have possessed the status of a federal university for five years only, it is the third time now that we are conducting such a representative conference on such a meaningful issue. North Caucasus is a territory, strategically important for Russia’s national security. It is no wonder that the region needs to be promoted in terms of socio-economic development. An advanced tourist sector could help significantly. In this respect, the historical and cultural heritage of the Great Silk Road is undoubtedly of great value.
In her speech Alina Afakoevna highlighted the model of tourism education in the School of Caucasian hospitality. The school was launched on the basis of the Institute of Service, Tourism and Design, North-Caucasus Federal University, Pyatigorsk, under a tripartite agreement between the University, the joint stock company «North Caucasus Resorts» and the Hague School of Hotel Industry. In general, for 2013-2017 the School has prepared more than 700 qualified specialists in service, tourism and hotel business. The employment of the graduates amounted for more than 90 %. The educational process in the University is implemented taking into account domestic and foreign advanced experience, having been gained by 16 teachers of the NCFU during their training in the leading universities of Europe. Cooperation has been established with a strategic partner of «North Caucasus resorts», which allows organizing production practice for students, and also getting recommendations of practitioners to update and improve educational programs. Also, the University has created a multidisciplinary resource centre with the aim of professional training, advanced training and retraining of secondary special education personnel and working professionals for the tourism cluster. Since 2012 95 educational programs has been developed for the center, and nearly 5 thousand people from all the regions of the North Caucasian Federal District have been trained on them. Actively conducted are also project activities, for example, a map of tourist routes of Stavropol region has been prepared both in Russian and English.
The subject of implementation of the model of tourism education was further developed by Vitaliy Belozerov, Advisor to the Rector and Director of the Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of NCFU. Recently, tourism has been actively developed in Russia, including in the area of the Great Silk Road in the North Caucasus. In 2016, the total number of tourists in the region amounted to 3.5 million, and by 2025 this figure will increase to 10 million. “The growth of tourist flows involves a major upgrade in the universities training specialists for tourism sector”, - said the Professor. Today, both the countries, in general, and the Caucasus, in particular, are faced with a shortage of qualified professionals engaged in the organization of tourist services. The NCFU has developed an integrated model for training necessary personnel. The model comprises staffing, content preparation, educational environment, employment of graduates and the labour market. Currently, more than a thousand people from 22 regions of the Russian Federation and 10 countries of the world participate in the programs of the School of Caucasian hospitality. Two profiles are being implemented: «Business Administration» and «International Tourism».
At the conference, Anna Aleksandrova, Professor of Department of Recreational Geography and Tourism of M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University and Laureate of the RF Government prize in the field of tourism, has developed the issue of the Chinese consumer in the Russian tourist market. Today, on almost all key indicators of tourism statistics, China is in the top of the world rankings and the leader in terms of outbound tourist flows. Between 2000 and 2016, the number of outwards trips by Chinese tourists has increased more than 13 times. Among the factors that stimulate tourism in the state, Anna Aleksandrova noted the growth of real incomes of the population, the simplification of passport obtaining procedures, the integration of China into the international economic space and other. Russia is one of the twenty popular destinations for Chinese tourists. Speaking about Russian inbound market, China is also leading the way. Anna Alexandrova drew attention of the conference attendees to the specifics of tourists from China. Among them there is a sharp predominance of the elderly, the duration of the trip is 6-8 days, but there are a large number of short trips of 1-2 days, more than half of the travel budget is spent on shopping. With regard to the degree of satisfaction, 82 percent of tourists from China are ready for re-visit Russia.
In the course of the event, Giuseppe Ciccarone, Dean of Department of Economics at La Sapienza University (Italy), outlined the features of the development of the tourism industry in Italy. Jorge Gomes, Head of the MBA Programme and Professor of Management at the Higher School of Economics and Management, Lisbon University (Portugal), highlighted the experiences and tendencies of international tourism in Portugal. The general interest was aroused by the concept of urban development for the resort of Kislovodsk, presented by Rakim Makhmudov, Chief of Department of Innovation, Strategic Partnership Development and Commercialization of NCFU.
The conference continued in the framework of the six sections. Tomorrow the participants will go to Arkhyz to attend the field workshop "Promotion of tourist destinations in the mountain areas of the North Caucasus". They will also be taken on a tour "Along the Route of the Great Silk Road". The conference will end on 7 October with the adoption of the resolution.
The IV North Caucasian Combined Expedition took place between July 20 and August 3, 2017. It was composed of scientists, educators and students from Moscow (Institute of Geography of RAS, Lomonosov Moscow State University), Stavropol (North Caucasian Federal University), Vladikavkaz (North Caucasian Institute for Mining and Metallurgy), Nalchik (Kabardino-Balkarian State University), Grozny (Chechen State University). The exploratory activities covered mountain areas of North Ossetia, the Chechen Republic and Dagestan. The expedition was headed by Aleksey Nikolayevich Gunya, Dr. Sci. in Geography, and Instructor of MAB-6 mountain team of the Russian Academy of Science.
The starting point of the expedition (July 20-23) was Alania National Park, North Ossetia. This stage involved A. N. Gunya, Dr. Sci. in Geography, and Instructor of MAB-6 mountain team of RAS; Yuri Isaevich Karaev, Director of Centre «Mountains» of the NCIMM; Gatsiev Marat Maximovich, Director of Alania National Park; Albina Albertovna Gazdarova, Assistant Director for environmental education, tourism and recreation; Oleg Izbekovich Dzodzikov, Head of «Youth Business Club». Members of the expedition examined the headwaters of the Urukh River, and, in particular, the Chefandzar ecosite, representing unique marsh spots in an outwash plain. This unique high-mountain ecosystem of 100 ha in area is located in the subalpine belt, about 2350 m above sea level, and serves as an indicator for global climatic changes. Fluctuations in heat and humidity and, in particular, depletion of snow cover in wintertime, have recently led to transformation of groundwater regime and emerging of vegetation within the limits of the ecosystem. The large-scale survey of the ecosite, undertaken by Oleg Dzodzikov through the use of a quad copter, will facilitate landscape and vegetation mapping and, consequently, provide a basis for a long-term site monitoring of this one-of-a-kind environment. However, some relationships still remain obscure: e. g., those between groundwater fluctuations and climatic changes, current cattle grazing and vegetation dynamics. In view of this, one needs a new objective-setting for future research work to be conducted basing on grants.
The fieldwork continued in the Chechen Republic from July 23 to August 3. The key techniques employed were: 1) spatial geophysical description of surface relief, from the most low-lying north-eastern territories of the Republic with below sea level benchmarks (-5 m near village Kargalinskaya) to the mountain range in Itum-Kale District with up to 3000 m above sea level benchmarks; 2) study of natural resource use and its dynamics in different vertical zones. The fieldwork on the Chechen territory was mutually carried out by A. N. Gunya, Dr. Sci. in Geography, and Instructor of MAB-6 mountain team of the Russian Academy of Science; Marina Nikolayevna Petrushina, Cand. Sc. (Geography), Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography and Landscape Science, Department of Geography, Moscow State University; A. V. Lysenko, Head of Department of Physical Geography, North Caucasian Federal University (Stavropol); A. M. Chechenov, Associate Professor, Kabardino-Balkarian State University; Y. I. Karaev, Director of Centre «Mountains» of the NCIMM; O. I. Dzodzikov, Head of «Youth Business Club», who accomplished the landscape survey by applying a quad copter; Dmitry Koryukhin, Master of Science in Economic and Social Geography of Russia, Department of Geography, Moscow State University. The Chechen Republic was represented by Umar Taishadievich Gairabekov, Cand. Sc. (Biology), Head of Department of Geography, Chechen State University; Zulfira Sherpaevna Gagaeva, Cand. Sc. (Geography), Academic Secretary of the Integrated Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Science (Grozny); students and graduate assistants of the Chechen State University.
The expedition was entrusted with the task of exploring landscapes and physiographic boundaries that should be taken into account when planning business activities on a republican scale. It should be emphasized that the Republic is crossed by major physiographic, regional and provincial borders. It would be incorrect to say that these borders have not been studied yet. In pre-war period and especially in 1960-1970s the territory of Chechnya was studied by many prominent physiographers, such as Nikolay Andreevich Gvozdetsky, Aleksandra Efimovna Fedina, and later, Aleksey Alekseevich Golovlev and others. Nevertheless, the territory and landscapes have experienced transformation in recent 25 years, when no research work was undertaken, in fact. Even lands suffered significant changes. Semi-desert landscapes of the Tersk Ridge are growing over with grassland and shrub vegetation, and mountain landscapes – with brushwood and forest plants. During the course of the expedition soil and vegetation samples were obtained. Moreover, a detailed large-scale survey of key sites was carried out by means of a quad copter.
All this may provide insights into the landscape structure and natural resource potential of the territories of the Chechen Republic, help establish a database and, consequently, bring existing learning aid products up to date, and map out a strategy for future research work. Even now it is obvious that one is in need for nature studies concerning landscape dynamics of lowland and submontane areas, mountain and forest areas with reproducing tree vegetation, high level nival-glacial zones with degrading glaciers. Processed information may prove helpful in writing articles and developing an expedition information package.
The expedition would not have succeeded without substantial support kindly lent by the Chechen State University, who secured arrival, accommodation and transportation of the members of the expedition team.
Development Strategy for Alania National Park
On May 6 the participants in the round table sessions on “Natural risks and hazards: preventive measures in mountain exploration and development”, that took place on May 5 in Vladikavkaz, joined
the travelling seminar on working-out a plan of strategic development for Federal State Budget Institution “Alania National Park”. The seminar was held on the territory of the Alania National
Park, Iraf District, North Ossetia.
The original alpine relief of the Park molded a unique variety of natural settings and, thus, formed a peculiar ecological system. More than 1000 plant species grow on the territory which is
inhabited by approximately 6000 animal species, many of them endemic not only to the Republic North Ossetia-Alania, but also the whole of North Caucasus. In view of the specific character of the
nature reserve regulations, special attention is paid to the protection of natural habitats and cultural heritage sites. Above this, measures are taken to foster traditional crafts and stimulate
recreational activities. Efforts of that kind may cause some managemental problems: e. g., how can one preserve both typical and distinctive mountain ecosystems and, at the same time, provide
people with the opportunity of visiting most interesting natural and cultural sites?
An elaborate long-term strategic plan of development for the Alania National Park would contribute immensely to a successful solution of the above problems, as explained by Mr. Gatsiev M.
M. in his report. The ensuing debate involved the seminar attendees and resulted in certain concept statements to be taken into consideration in further work planning for the Alania National
Park. All proposals worthwhile will be reflected on our web pages.
The event is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the North Caucasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (State Technological University), as well as to the Year of Ecology and the 9th
International Academic and Research Conference «Mountain Ecosystems: Priority Development Fields» to be held in October present year.
The round table activities were mutually shared by the representatives of numerous authorities and institutions in the Republic and the North Caucasian Federal District, guests from other Russian
regions and abroad.
As moderators acted Professor Alexey Gunya, Instructor of the MAB-6 mountain team of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Science, and Yuri Karaev, Deputy Director of the Center
for International Cooperation, External Relations and Sustainable Development of the North Caucasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (State Technological University).
Yuri Razorenov, acting rector of NCIMM (STU) greeted the round table participants and other guests and wished everybody success in their efforts. According to Mr. Razorenov, it is of
significant importance to set proper priorities in order to create favorable conditions for living and further developing in scarce mountainous areas.
